Most camera dolly wheels can be rotated, meaning the front and rear wheels can all rotate the same angle so the camera dolly can move laterally at any angle. For most normal operating conditions, the laterally moving rear wheel is called the "smart rear wheel" and the front wheel is normally locked and acts as a passive wheel. In a true traverse, all four wheels are switched to traverse mode. To make the camera dolly move smoothly and without shaking, it can only be done on a smooth floor.
